Pop star Abby Murphy is living every girl’s dream. She has fame, fortune, and a handsome boyfriend, a guitar player named Sean. That changes the night she finds him in the arms of another woman. Hurt and betrayed, Abby ends their relationship. But Sean won’t

accept the breakup, and she soon learns that he’s had a hidden agenda all along. Overnight, Sean transforms from loving boyfriend to dangerous adversary, and Abby no longer knows who she can trust among her friends and family.

Abby turns to her bodyguard, Danny Nucci, a man who will do everything in his power to keep her safe. But when Abby realizes her feelings for Danny run much deeper than she thought, she refuses to give in to her attraction in order to preserve her new found

independence as well as protect Danny from Sean’s machinations.

When Abby finally finds the strength to reclaim her life and acknowledge her growing love for Danny, will she be able to let him in? And will Danny be able to overcome his own demons to be the man she needs him to be? Or will she be forced to let him go forever?

excerpt

Abby sagged against the elevator wall, completely exhausted from her long day. All she wanted now was the hot bath Sean had promised, followed by blissful sleep. Sophie, along with her personal security detail, Danny Nucci and Ron Miller, stepped into the elevator with her.

“That wasn’t as bad as it could’ve been,” Sophie said.

“Danny was lucky enough to get cornered by that woman.” Ron chuckled and pressed the buttons for their floors. “Left me to hold back all the squealing teenagers.”

Abby fought the urge to roll her eyes. The woman was gross. She was dressed like a cheap whore. And, she was there with her daughter, not at some nightclub. She wouldn’t leave Danny alone.

“You could’ve given me some help. She was disgusting.” He shook his head exaggeratedly.

“She was quite fond of you.” Abby laughed to mask her real feelings.

“Not one of you tried to intervene. I’m gonna need to shower for a week in order to get her perfume out of my nose. She reeked.”

“Yeah, you do smell pretty,” Abby goaded.

“I’ll remember this. Just wait,” Danny warned as the elevator door opened to Sophie’s floor.

“Night.” Sophie gave Abby a quick peck on the cheek before she stepped off the elevator.

“Night.” Abby waited inside the elevator with Danny. He held the door open while Ron walked Sophie to her room.

“So, what are your plans for the rest of the night? A late night rendezvous with the smelly cougar?” Abby teased.

“Aren’t you the funny one this evening. Well, baby doll, it’s two-thirty in the morning, so I’m thinking sleep. Why? Did you have something in mind?”

She got lost for a minute in his deep-brown eyes that sparkled with mischief. She’d always thought he was hot, but she was caught off guard by the desire to touch his cheek, to smooth her fingertips over his dimples. This visceral reaction to Danny kept happening more and more frequently, no matter how much she tried to suppress it.

“Um, you still with me, Abby?”

She blinked, and her cheeks flushed with heat. “Oh, you want me to answer you?” she laughed to cover up her embarrassment. She didn’t want him to realize she’d been daydreaming about how rough his five o’ clock shadow would feel against the flat of her tongue. “I told you how I feel about your stupid nicknames.” She tried to sound pissed, but didn’t pull it off.

Ron laughed as he entered the elevator and pressed the button for their floor. Danny glared at him for a moment then started laughing with him.

Abby changed the subject. Much safer that way. “What time are we heading out in the morning?”

“Oh-nine-hundred hours,” Danny replied.

“Okay, Drill Sergeant, I’ll be ready.” The elevator dinged, and the doors opened to the semi-private floor which held the suite she shared with Sean, along with another across the hall where Danny and Ron stayed.

“Well, Military Man, it’s been a pleasure. I’m gonna go pass the hell out. Have a good night. See ya, Ron.” She waved over her shoulder as she slid her keycard through the electronic lock. When the reader beeped and the green light came on, she gave the men one last smile before entering her suite.

She closed the door and removed the nude color platform pumps from her aching feet. Clearly, her shoes were made for showing, not walking. She made her way into the large sunken living room; the muted neon glow from the Vegas strip was the only light in the room.

“Sean?” Abby called on her way to the bedroom. She dropped her shoes next to the dresser.

Sean wasn’t there, even though he’d said he would be. Abby blew out a puff of air, annoyed with herself for believing him, yet again. She wasn’t lying when she said she’d reached her limit, but that didn’t matter when he knew that it wasn’t up to her anyway. Her mother would never let her leave him. She had plans, and it didn’t matter what Abby wanted. Abby turned the light on then dug into her bag for her phone. It wasn’t there. “Fuck,” she muttered. She picked up the hotel phone and dialed Sean’s number. It went to voicemail. She hung up. There was no point in leaving a message.

She dialed back to the operator and asked to be connected to Sophie’s room.

“Hey, sorry to bother you, but do you have my phone?”

“No, I don’t think so, but let me look. Hold on.”

Abby chewed her lip, thinking about Sean. Where the hell was he? Worse, who was he with? A hard knot formed in her stomach as she thought about what he might be doing.

“Hey,” Sophie said. “I don’t have it.”

“I must’ve left it in my dressing room.” Typical, considering the way her luck had been tonight. “Sean’s not here. You know what that means.” She sighed. “I’m gonna go find my phone.”

“Why do you even bother with him anymore? We’ve hashed this out before.”

“It’s late. Can we talk about this later? He’s not here and right now I can’t even think about what that means, but I know I need my phone.” She was sick of it all.

“You shouldn’t go alone.”

“It’ll take twenty minutes. Quick and easy.” Thankfully the arena was connected to the hotel.

“Okay, but ask one of the boys to go.”

“They’ve had a long night. I don’t want to bother them. I won’t be long, and besides, you’ll know where I am. When I find my phone, I’ll call you.”

“Abby! Tell them. I get that you’re upset, because Sean’s disappeared…again but don’t do something stupid.”

“Fine. Will you come with?”

“I’ll meet you at the elevator.”

“Perfect. Thanks.” Abby slipped on a pair of flats and unhooked the panic button from her purse and attached it to her bracelet. Danny insisted that she wear the damn thing. She insisted that it looked good as a charm she could wear hanging from wrist or attached to her purse. After all, security was important, but appearances could make or break her career. She didn’t want it to look like she had a tracking device on her.

Abby double-checked that her keycard was in her pocket before she let her door close behind her, then she jabbed the call button for the elevator. She was about to knock on the door to Danny and Ron’s suite, but a ding sounded behind her and announced the arrival of the elevator. “Damn.” She decided to call the guys when she got her phone and hurried into the elevator before the doors could slide shut without her.

Never fall in love with a bank robber.

Especially if she’s the one who robbed your bank, took you hostage, and dumped you unconscious at the local convenience store. And definitely not if you are the assistant district attorney of Tupelo, Mississippi.

This is the advice Hank Huckleberry Rivers would have given himself, back when he was a man who vowed to always walk on the right side of the law. The same law that had seemed sacrosanct ever since the day he and his friends watched as two men were murdered right below their tree house.

Falling in love with a dangerous criminal can have life-altering consequences, though. And when the past and the present meet head-on, Hank finds himself in more trouble than he ever bargained for. He must run to save his life, daring to find answers to the questions threatening his safety and his heart, as the killer below the tree house comes after Hank—and his pistol-wielding bank robber.

It’s a simple case of love in the first degree.

Review

4 STARS!

As a young boy, Hank witnesses a murder that sets him on a course in life that is clearly set on the right side of the law. As an adult, he works for the District Attorney ensuring justice is served. But one day something changes, and he finds that his heart has crossed the line and fallen in love with Delilah – a criminal without apology. Running from the law, the past, and anything resembling good sense, Hank and Delilah go on an adventure that’s a good time for all.

Annie Rose Welch draws readers in from the very beginning with Pistol Fanny’s. Adventure, romance, and a ton of fun fill the pages of this tale of Hank and Delilah. Sometimes the dialogue can be a little harsh, especially if one is not used to the talk of the South), which is the only reason why I gave it 4 stars instead of 5! The story itself is great, and I found it very unique. Definitely worth the read.

excerpt

Even so, these mystical women in heels who were robbing and donating continued to make headlines, and banks across the states had never been busier. Men were lining up, never taking such an interest in where their money was stashed, all in hopes of catching a glimpse of them.

Posters were made, memes popped up like mushrooms in a wet field online, and a comic strip was dedicated to these women. Pistollette was bigger than life, her legs spread apart, a pistol in each hand, looking down on the world. That exaggerated smile on her face, those brown blinking eyes.

Her sisters were right beside her, blowing things up, winking and playing the boom box, tap dancing by a door, flipping on counters. Close to their hairlines, a zipper, and a clear thin line that separated their two sides. The good and the bad. The zipper was the key to their true identity. And below them all were men, amplified cartoon hearts floating from their chests, stars in their eyes, and lust in their smiles.

The slogan for these women—not only do they steal your money, they collect interest on your heart.

The entire world knew who they were. Headlines read: Maybe coming to a bank near you.

Propaganda hung in alleys, on fences, above urinals, and below in underground train stations. They were up in pool halls, in dive bars, and on the walls of the swankiest clubs in New York. They had become art. Modern day sophisticate meets old lawless ruggedness. A huge billboard hung in Hollywood, showing the girls appearing out of smoke: Stealing the hearts of the rich guys, giving to the poor ones. Pistollette and her Sirens will take you by storm! They were for the good guys of the world who cared enough to figure it out.

They were elusive and mysterious, and there was a reward for any man who would dare remove any of their masks. The world was sure underneath the masquerades were the most beautiful faces any man had ever seen. No one ever tried. They were too stupefied in their presence. They were truck drivers’ and bikers’ dreams, doctors’ and lawyers’ fantasies.

The hoopla went on and on.

Born and raised in New Orleans, Annie has a habit of shortening her words and telling long stories. She speaks with a southern flair and cooks with it too. At the tender age of twenty- one, she hitched up her wagons (took her first plane ride) and moved out west to the big shake (California).

Her writing career began one sleepless night when she imagined a gorgeous woman and a man with maniacal hair floating above her like lightening bugs falling from the sky. Curious about them, their story, and why they were floating around in her head, she sat down and penned (typed) her first novel, Marigny Street. A dream come true for her, she hasn’t stopped writing since. She loves a damn good love story, always has, no matter what the genre. She is particularly moved by imperfect love that in its own unique way is perfect, the notion of love at first sight, soul mates, and things that are generally out of the norm.

When she’s not writing she enjoys dabbling in photography and finding new, inspirational music to add to her collection. Deciding on a whim to hitch up those same wagons, Annie currently resides in Texas (where everything is bigger) with her husband, daughter, and their two peculiar dogs, Boudreaux and Tabasco (who, call her crazy, bark with an accent).

©2015 Debra Presley

The sun rose, and the rays seeped through the windows of the hotel suite. The brightness woke Danny before his alarm. He grabbed his phone to check the time a moment before his alarm starting blaring.

“Fuck.” He pressed snooze and stretched lazily. From the corner of his eye, he saw someone in the chair across from him. His body and mind were in action, assessing the threat, before he realized that is was Abby. At some point while he’d slept, she’d moved from the bedroom to the chair. She was wrapped in the blanket from his bed, snoring lightly. Her head was tilted to the side, resting on a small accent pillow, and her feet hung over the edge. She looked utterly adorable, and Danny hesitated to wake her. After last night, she needed the rest, and he had work to do before they were scheduled to be on the bus. He’d let her sleep a while longer.

He decided to deal with Vivien first and dialed her number as he walked into the bedroom.

“Mr. Nucci,” she answered. He wanted to roll his eyes every time she called him “Mr. Nucci.” Everyone in Abby’s entourage was informal except her. Danny tried to avoid dealing with Vivien. She and Abby had a complicated relationship that he tried to stay out of. It wasn’t his business, and as long as it didn’t affect Abby’s safety, he didn’t need to weigh in. Abby had hinted at a troubled home life when she was younger, but she’d never really shared that part of her life with him.

“Vivien, I’m not sure if you’re aware of what happened last night, but—”

“I’m well aware of my daughter’s impulsiveness.”

Danny held his tongue. Vivien hated to hear about problems. She just wanted them to go away.

“I think we need to discuss this situation.”

“What’s there to discuss? Abigail knows what’s expected of her.”

“That’s between you and Abby. I’m here to keep her safe, and last night she was assaulted. That warrants a conversation.”

“I don’t agree, but if you insist, we can meet for a few minutes this morning. I’ll have my assistant call you with a time.” She hung up the phone before Danny could say anything else.

He stared at Abby sleeping in the other room. If he wanted to prep her for their meeting, he needed to wake her now. Danny returned to the living room.

“Abby,” he whispered and sat next to her on the ottoman. He shook her gently. Nothing. She didn’t even stir. He watched her sleep for a moment then leaned over to gently push her champagne-colored hair away from her face. He took in her fair complexion sprinkled lightly with freckles and then abruptly stood. He needed to stop before his thoughts got the better of him. The last thing he needed was for Abby to see how much she affected him.

He worked hard at keeping things professional because he knew all too well what happened when he cared too much for someone. Since Vanessa, Danny hadn’t allowed himself to get close to any woman, and he still wasn’t ready to take that step. Shit, last night he nearly lost it when he saw Sean with Abby. It brought up too many memories that hit too close to home. He failed when it came to Vanessa; he wasn’t going to let anything cloud his judgment this time.

He watched Abby resting soundly, but he couldn’t stop thinking of his fiancé. He blamed himself for her death. And at the time, it nearly destroyed him.

Their tour of duty in Iraq had been tense, and his mind was on other things. He missed the signs that something was wrong, and after she died, nothing anyone said could convince him that he wasn’t responsible. Not only were they engaged, but she was also a fellow soldier who he’d worked with since boot camp. They’d served side-by-side, both sergeants in the Psychological Operations unit, commonly known as Psy-Ops.

“Abby.” He said her name louder but didn’t touch her this time. Abby said something in her sleep, but he had no idea what. Danny chuckled because, really, she was just too adorable.

“Come on sleepyhead; you have to wake up,” he coaxed.

“Go away.” She gathered the blanket closer to her body.

“I can’t. It’s time to get up. Let’s go.” He pulled at the blanket and saw that she was only wearing the T-shirt he gave her last night. He stared. Her legs were smooth and sexy, and there was a hint of her purple lace panties peeking out. Danny threw the blanket over Abby and stood quickly. He worked for Abby. He didn’t need images of her half naked in his brain.

He walked behind the chair. Distance was a must right now. His phone alarm sang “Reveille” and instead of shutting it off, he increased the volume and placed it by Abby’s ear.

She jumped, causing the ottoman to shift forward. Danny laughed at her expression but stopped when she lost her balance and fell to the floor. Like a scene from a sitcom, she landed on her ass, with her legs up in the air. Abby quickly covered herself with the blanket.

“Are you okay?” he asked.

“Screw you, Nucci.” She looked up at him with narrowed eyes. “Now help me up, asshole.”

Danny helped her stand, mindful of her bruised arm. The blanket fell to the floor, leaving Abby in his old New York Yankees T-shirt. Even though he knew what to expect this time, the sight was too much to ignore. He tried to avert his eyes but failed.

Abby laughed and walked slowly into the bedroom, shaking her sexy ass. “I’m gonna grab a quick shower. Can you get my suitcase or do you have another one of these I could wear?” Abby flipped up the end of Danny’s shirt, giving Danny an eye full.

“I’ll get your clothes.” Danny sighed and looked up at the ceiling. He was clearly off his game.

“Thanks.” Abby winked and laughed even louder. She closed the door and left him standing in the living room with his mouth hanging open. Holy shit. His mind raced with all the things he wanted to do to her, and he was thankful for the reprieve. He grabbed the keycard to Abby’s room and left to go get her things.

excerpt

Once I was certain Hadeel had chewed and swallowed her food, I offered her some juice.  She shook her head and said clearly, “No, Mama.”  Pointing to the rice and pasta mixture, she demanded, “I want more of that.”

I gave her another spoonful before looking at Krystal, who looked as surprised as I felt.  Krystal waited until the toddler had finished chewing and had taken a sip of juice before asking, “Hadeel, who is that over there?”

After looking across to where Krystal was pointing, she said, “Daddy and Hani.”

“What is Daddy doing?”

“Feeding the baby,” she replied before reaching for the risotto and saying, “I want more, Mama.”

I gestured to Krystal and asked, “Who is this?”

“It’s Kry-stal!” Hadeel said then giggled before indicating she wanted more risotto.  I gave her another spoonful and asked Krystal to get Michael, who was giving Hani a bottle while talking to a male cousin.  I watched as Krystal interrupted the discussion and motioned for Michael to follow her.  He walked over with Hani in his arms.

“What’s wrong?” Michael asked worriedly as he sat on the other side of Hadeel’s highchair.

“Hadeel, tell Daddy what you want.”

“I want more!” she exclaimed and indicated the rice and pasta.  “I like that.”

Michael looked stunned then amused.  I recounted the other sentences Hadeel had uttered and wondered aloud how many others she knew and just hadn’t shared with us, yet.  A few moments later, she dropped the stuffed Winnie the Pooh toy she’d been holding and exclaimed, “Oh, fuck!  Pooh fell down.”

I was horrified.  Michael exploded with laughter and couldn’t seem to stop.  Krystal snickered beside me.  The relatives in our vicinity asked what was so funny.  Michael was laughing so hard he was crying and couldn’t catch his breath.

“I guess you were right,” he said, once he’d regained enough control over himself to speak again.  “I suppose I shouldn’t swear in front of the children.”  He burst out laughing again, saw my expression, and said, “Sorry.  It’s too funny.”

“It won’t be funny when we go to Mommy and Me exercise class and she says that word in front of the other mothers and children,” I declared angrily.

Michael got up, came around the highchair, bent down, and kissed me. Depositing Hani into my arms, he turned to Hadeel and said something to her in Arabic.  She answered – in Arabic.  Michael turned to me with a huge grin on his face and said, “By Jove, I think she’s got it!”

My anger dissipated in an instant.  Michael seemed exuberant.  He looked carefree and totally happy.  I caught a glimpse of Al out of the corner of my eye and saw him as he intently watched Michael.  He himself was grinning madly, and I knew how happy it made him to see his grandson so relaxed and overjoyed.
